Due to his sexual cravings as a gay being unfulfilled, Applewhite quit his job there after seeking a sexual relationship with a male student. His religious upbringing probably did not allow same-sex relationships. When his wife, Ann Pearce found out about the affair in 1965, he and she divorced three years later. Applewhite’s father rejected him after learning that he was gay.
After leaving the University of Alabama, Applewhite again moved to Houston in 1965 to lead the music department at the University of St. Thomas. His classmates often saw him as a charismatic speaker and a sharp dresser.
