American religious pioneer Marshall Herff Applewhite Jr. (May 17, 1931 – March 26, 1997) founded the Heaven’s Gate sect.

After being freed, Applewhite and Nettles went on tour in California and Oregon, where they gradually gained a dedicated following. They promised their followers that aliens would come to them and give them new bodies.

Initially, Applewhite thought he and his followers would physically ascend to a spacecraft where their bodies would be changed, but he subsequently realized that their bodies were merely holding places for their souls, which would be transferred into new bodies.
