Gaetz grew up close to Fort Walton Beach and went to Niceville High School. He graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science in transdisciplinary sciences in 2003 and William & Mary Law School with a Juris Doctor in 2007.
Gaetz was admitted to the Florida Bar on February 6th, 2008. The Florida bar prohibited Gaetz from practicing law in October 2021 as a result of outstanding fees.
From 2010 until 2016, he was a lawmaker in the Florida House of Representatives. His advocacy of Florida’s divisive “stand-your-ground” law brought him international notoriety in the wake of Trayvon Martin’s 2012 killing.
In addition to being re-elected in 2018 and 2020, he was initially chosen to serve in the US House of Representatives in 2016.
Gaetz was accused of engaging in a sexual connection with a 17-year-old girl in violation of federal sex trafficking laws, which Gaetz disputed, and the Department of Justice launched an inquiry into the matter in late 2020.
