Matthew John David Hancock was born in Chester, Cheshire, on October 2, 1978, to Michael Hancock and Shirley Hills (now Carter). Hancock has a brother and an older sister.

In January 2010, Hancock was chosen as the Conservative candidate for West Suffolk. Matt Hancock narrowly defeated Natalie Elphicke (a solicitor who later became MP for Dover) in the final ballot by 88 votes to 81.

At the 2010 general election, he was elected as the constituency’s MP with 24,312 votes, 13,050 more than Liberal Democrat candidate Belinda Brooks-Gordon. Hancock was appointed to the Public Accounts Committee in June.

He was a member of this committee until November 2012. Between October 2010 and December 2012, Hancock served on the Standards and Privileges Committee.

Matt Hancock claimed he was excluded from a discussion about apprentices because he arrived “just 30 seconds late” in January 2013, and Daybreak host Matt Barbet accused him of lying.

Hancock admitted on social media that he was running behind schedule, but claimed he arrived early for the interview and was wrongfully denied access to the set by the producers.

Hancock should have arrived 30 minutes earlier to get ready for the interview, according to Barbet, who claimed that Hancock was aware that he was “much more than a minute late.”
