He formerly played for Portsmouth, Swindon Town, and Bournemouth before joining Newcastle United in 2016.

Ritchie qualified to play for Scotland through his Scottish father, despite being born and raised in England. On March 25, 2015, he made his senior international debut against Northern Ireland in a friendly match.

Ritchie was eligible for the national teams of England, where he was born and reared, and Scotland, where his father was born.

He was called up to the Scotland national football team on March 16, 2015, for a friendly against Northern Ireland and a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying against Gibraltar. On March 25th, Ritchie made his debut against Northern Ireland at Hampden Park, taking the 85th-minute corner that set up Christophe Berra’s header for the game’s only goal.
