Northern Ireland’s Belfast is where Michael Conlan was born. John, his coach, and father, is a native of Drimnagh in County Dublin. Jamie, his older brother, was a professional boxer as well.

Conlan represented Italia Thunder in the World Series of Boxing at the beginning of 2015.

Over the course of 14 weeks, Conlan and his teammate, fellow Irish boxer Paddy Barnes, would engage in seven fights in an effort to qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

Conlan won five of his seven matches, which was just enough for him to place second in the individual standings and qualify for the Rio Olympics.

Conlan won the bantamweight European Championships in August 2015 and was named Boxer of the Tournament. He competed in four fights, defeating representatives from France, Denmark, Italy, and Great Britain.

According to the scorecards of each judge, he only dropped 3 out of a possible 36 rounds. He faced Qais Ashfaq of Great Britain in the final, which was a rematch of the Commonwealth Games final from 2014.

The Belfast fighter won the second round on a split decision, and by the third round, the No. 1 seed (Conlan) was in cruise control, winning the round and the contest by unanimous decision to maintain Ireland’s hold on the European bantamweight title and the best boxer award (both of which John Joe Nevin won in 2013).
