American architect Michael E. “Mike” Reynolds was born in 1945 and resides in New Mexico. He is well known for building passive solar “Earthship” residences. He promotes fundamental sustainability in living. He favors recycling unconventional construction materials from waste streams, such as car tires, and has attacked the architectural industry for conforming to standard theory and practice.
He is also well known for doing projects that push the limits of acceptable building practices.
Reynolds was raised in the Kentucky city of Louisville.
He claimed that his father’s material storage and recycling method served as an early example of utilizing recycled resources. Reynolds graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1969, and he immediately began producing his challenging artwork.
The year after his thesis was published in Architectural Record in 1971, he constructed his first house out of reclaimed materials.
