When he was only three months old, his Scottish-born vaudevillian father moved to New York from Glasgow with his family. His mother was a burlesque actress and former chorus girl from Kansas City, Missouri.
They lived in the Greenpoint neighbourhood of Brooklyn. Rooney was born while his parents were on stage together in a Brooklyn performance of A Gaiety Girl.
He later recalled in his memoirs how, while wearing a specially made tuxedo, he began performing at the age of 17 months as a routine for his parents.
In all, Rooney was married eight times, six of which ended in divorce. In 1942, he wed Ava Gardner, a young actress who was unknown at the time, as his first spouse.
He allegedly committed adultery, which contributed to their divorce the following year. Rooney met and married Betty Jane Phillips in 1944 while serving in Alabama; she later achieved recognition as B. J. Baker.
They had two boys together. This marriage was dissolved when he returned from Europe at the conclusion of World War II.
His 1949 union with actress Martha Vickers ended in divorce in 1951, and they have one son together. He married the actress Elaine Mahnken in 1952; their marriage ended in divorce in 1958.

In 1978, he wed Jan Chamberlin, his eighth and final wife. Before his death, they were married for 34 years (longer than his seven previous unions combined). However, they broke up in 2012.
