American actor Mickey Rooney was born Joseph Yule Jr. on September 23, 1920, and passed away on April 6, 2014. He was one of the last silent-film stars still alive, having featured in more than 300 movies over the course of a nine-decade career.

From 1939 until 1941, he was the top box office draw and one of the highest-paid actors in history.

Rooney portrayed the character of Andy Hardy in a run of 16 films in the 1930s and 1940s that typified the self-image of mainstream America at the height of a career punctuated by declines and comebacks.

He made 43 pictures during the height of his career, which spanned the ages of 15 to 25, and was one of MGM’s most consistently lucrative actors.

He was a talented performer who later in his career rose to fame as a beloved character actor. Rooney was once referred to as “the best there has ever been” by Laurence Olivier.

Rooney was described as “the closest thing to a genius” by Clarence Brown, who directed him in two of his earliest dramatic roles in National Velvet and The Human Comedy.

For playing the title character in the television film Bill, he won a 1982 Golden Globe Award, an Emmy Award the following year, and an Academy Honorary Award.

Rooney began acting as a child in vaudeville before making his film debut at age 6.

He played Puck in the stage production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the ensuing movie when he was 14 and 15.

He started portraying Andy Hardy at the age of 16, and at the age of 17, he won his first award for Whitey Marsh in Boys Town.

At the age of 19, Rooney became the second-youngest Best Actor in a Leading Role nominee and the first teenager to receive an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Mickey Moran in the 1939 film adaption of the coming-of-age Broadway musical Babes in Arms.

He also received a special Academy Juvenile Award that year. For his performance as Homer Macauley in The Human Comedy, Rooney was nominated for an Academy Award in the same category for the second time.
