The 88-year-old Kerley retired from playing football after sixteen seasons in 1969 and had a record of 276 SANFL games and scoring 123 goals.

After his retirement, he took coaching as a full-time career in 1970. He first coached Glenelg, where he signed to play as well as coach from 1967 until his playing retirement in 1969.
