Nika Shakarami was born on October 2, 2005. She was an Iranian adolescent who went missing on September 20, 2022, in Tehran, during the 2022 Iranian demonstrations following the murder of Mahsa Amini.
Nika’s body was discovered 10 days later by her family, having died under dubious circumstances that were alleged to include security forces assault.
After her body was identified, her family planned to bury her in Khorramabad, but the body was kidnapped by Iranian officials and buried in Veysian, ostensibly to avoid a funeral procession and to quell further outrage.
Nika’s background is unknown to the general public. Nika has familial roots in Khorramabad in southern Iran, where her father was born. Nika resided in Tehran with her aunt and mother.
Nika Shakarami went missing on September 20th after demonstrating in Tehran. Her aunt informed BBC Persian that in her last communication with a friend, she stated that she was being pursued by security personnel. Nika’s body was discovered in a mortuary at a prison center in the capital by her relatives.
