Daley Thompson’s Decathlon, Platoon, and Robocop were among the many games released by the Manchester-based company for home computers.

A back catalogue of licensed games based on popular film and television franchises, including Batman, The Addams Family, Jurassic Park, Rambo, and Transformers, to name a few, helped the company succeed.

Ben Ward, his son, announced his father’s death on Twitter.

“Sad to report that my father David Ward has died,” Ward wrote. “Born in 1947, he was a computer games pioneer and father of six. We had a complicated relationship and we loved each other. Will miss you Pop.”

According to Andy Payne, VP of Special Effects, “David Ward, co-founder of Ocean Software, has passed away. Another British gaming legend has passed away.”

Ward and Woods were inducted into the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) Hall of Fame in 2004, which honours industry pioneers.
