The great Santoor maestro and globally known musician Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma passed away this morning in Mumbai. At the time of his death, he was 84 years old.
Shiv Kumar, who was born on January 13, 1938, in Jammu and Kashmir, began practising singing and tabla at the age of five.
He began studying Santoor at the age of thirteen. He had been on dialysis for the preceding six months due to kidney difficulties.
He died as a result of heart arrest.
Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986, the Padma Shri Award in 1991, and the Padma Vibhushan Award in 2001.
He was set to perform a jugalbandi with flute legend Hariprasad Chaurasia under the name ‘Mahima Samaroh’ in a live event in Bhopal on the 15th of this month. ‘Silsila,’ ‘Lamhe,’ and ‘Chandni,’ among others, have included Shiv-soulful Hari’s music.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his condolences over the demise of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji. According to him, Shivkumar Sharma Ji popularized the Santoor on a global scale, and his music would continue to captivate future generations.
According to the Prime Minister, Shivkumarji’s encounters with him have made the cultural world a poorer place.
