Schindler was born on April 28, 1908, in Zwittau, Moravia, Austria-Hungary, to a Sudeten German family.

Johann “Hans” Schindler, the proprietor of a farm machinery company, and Franziska “Fanny” Schindler (née Luser) were his parents.

Elfriede, his younger sister, was born in 1915. Schindler enrolled in a technical school after finishing basic and secondary school but was expelled in 1924 for falsifying his report card.

He went on to graduate, but he did not sit for the Abitur exams, which would have allowed him to attend college or university.

Instead, he studied many vocations in Brno, including chauffeuring and machinery, and spent three years working for his father.

He purchased a 250-cc Moto Guzzi racing motorcycle and competed recreationally in mountain races for the next four years.

A one-page letter signed by Schindler on August 22, 1944, sold for $59,135 in an online auction in August 2013. Schindler’s consent for a manufacturing supervisor to send machinery to Czechoslovakia was indicated in the letter.

The same unidentified auction buyer had previously paid $63,426 for Schindler’s Kraków factory building paperwork in 1943.
