American cartoonist Paul Coker Jr. passed away on July 23, 2022. (he was born on March 5, 1929). In addition to creating characters for Rankin-Bass TV series, advertisements, and other projects, he worked in a range of media, including Mad.

The University of Kansas is where Coker, a native of Lawrence, Kansas, studied painting and drawing before accepting a job creating greeting cards for Hallmark in the 1950s. He would remain in this position for quite some time.

 

Coker began his lengthy association with Mad magazine in 1961, and well into the twenty-first century, he continued to illustrate a significant number of works.

He gained notoriety in particular for his popular “Horrifying Cliches” panels. Additionally, he provided the illustrations for several of the parodies of movies and television episodes that were published in the magazine, such as those about Star Trek, Jurassic Park, Twister, Frasier, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Caroline in the City.
