Pervez Musharraf (Urdu: romanized: Parvez Musharraf; born August 11, 1943) is a former Pakistani politician and retired four-star general who became the country’s ninth president in 1999 following a successful military takeover of the federal government.

He was president from 2001 to 2008, when he resigned to avoid impeachment proceedings.

Musharraf grew up in Karachi and Istanbul after being born in Delhi during the British Raj.

He studied mathematics at Forman Christian College in Lahore and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom.

Musharraf graduated from the Pakistan Military Academy in 1961 and joined the Pakistan Army in 1964, during which time he was heavily involved in the Afghan civil war.

Musharraf saw battle as a second lieutenant in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965.

He was commanding an artillery brigade by the 1980s.

Musharraf was promoted to major general in the 1990s and assigned to an infantry division; he eventually became the commander of the Special Services Group.

He became deputy military secretary and director general of military operations shortly after.
