Clarke is a single England international who represented his country at all youth levels. He has won England under-21 awards, and was captain of England from the Under-16 to the Under-21 levels. He made his debut with the England Under-21 side in 2002, as a substitute for the Slovakia Under-21s. He was awarded eight caps for England’s under-21 side between 2002 between 2002 and 2003.
In September 2004, Clarke was signed by Blackpool and was later under the management of Colin Hendry, initially on an initial one-month loan, but later with an option to turn the transfer permanent, at a cost of PS150,000. At the time Clarke was brought to Blackpool, Blackpool was eight points less than safety. As a result of his contribution to the defence, his contributions allowed the club to avoid the relegation process. Clarke began his career at Everton when he signed his debut professional deal in the month of January 1999. Clarke made his debut for the senior team in 2001 in the match against Coventry City. He played just nine times within the Premier League, largely in the unforgiving position of right-back, instead of the preferred position of centre-half. Then, in August of 2002, he was on on loan to Blackpool in the Blackpool League, where he played 16 league appearances and scored 3 goals (two of them during his home debut) during a three month loan period. His efforts played a significant role of being the “Seasiders” stringing together a streak of clean sheets and climbing to the upper echelons of the play-offs for 2002-03. Despite the best efforts of manager Steve McMahon’s attempts, an official agreement was not a reality so Clarke was back at Goodison Park in early November. He was released in the month of February, 2003. was out on loan once more but the second time with Port Vale, also of the Second Division, where he had 13 appearances over a three-month period. The manager praised him Brian Horton for his strong commitment to work. He was on loan with First Division Coventry City, playing in five games. The contract he signed with Everton ended at the conclusion of the 2003-04 season and he refused the club’s offer to sign an extension, even though the club kept him with a month-to-month agreement.
In 2010–11 Clarke led his side to a third-place finish, again an ever-present in the first eleven, starting and finishing all league games. He was rewarded with a new three-year contract, keeping him at the club until summer 2014. This time they made it into the play-off final, where they were beaten 3–0 by Peterborough United. Clarke was made Town’s Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, and was also made PFA Fans’ Player of the Year for League One. During the 2011–12 season Clarke was limited to 31 league appearances for the terriers due to an injury picked up in September 2011 and the form of the club’s other centre backs, missing much of the club’s games in September and February. Clarke through would go on to lead Huddersfield to fourth place during the regular season to qualify for the play-offs for a third constitutive year. This time, Town went through to the final after winning 3–2 on aggregate against MK Dons, to beat Sheffield United 8–7 on penalties; Clarke scored the first of eight consecutive penalty successes after three misses from his teammates. He made 47 appearances in the 2012–13 campaign, helping Huddersfield to remain four points above the relegation zone by the end of the season. He played 28 games in the 2013–14 season, as manager Mark Robins led the club to a 17th-place finish. He missed 12 weeks of the campaign after suffering medial knee ligament damage. Having made 225 appearances for the club in a five-year spell, he left the club after not being offered a new contract in the summer.
