Kay was born and raised in Bolton, and she attended the University of Salford to study media performance. He eventually received the North West Comedian of the Year award after beginning to perform stand-up comedy on a part-time basis.
His performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1998 earned him a nomination for a Perrier Award, which followed his victory in the Channel 4 competition So You Think You’re Funny the previous year.
In the year 2000, he collaborated on the writing and starred in the Channel 4 comedy series That Peter Kay Thing, which he co-created and starred in.
