Italian former football official Pierluigi Collina was born on February 13, 1960. He is recognized as the most acceptable football referee of all time and won the FIFA award for “Best Referee of the Year” six times in a row. Collina grew up raised in Bologna and graduated with a degree in economics from the university there in 1984.
During his adolescent years, he played centre-back for a local team, but in 1977, he was persuaded to enrol in a refereeing school, where it was discovered that he had a specific love for the job. He completed his training and began officiating high-level regional matches in three years. In 1988, he moved up to Serie C1 and Serie C2 at the third national level more quickly than usual. After three seasons, he was promoted to refereeing Serie B and Serie A matches.
Collina developed a severe case of alopecia at this time, which resulted in the total loss of all of his facial hair and gave him the nickname Kojak.
Collina is still actively involved in football as the Head of Referees for the Football Federation of Ukraine since 2010, a member of the UEFA Referees Committee, and the Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee. He works with the Italian Football Referees Association as an unpaid consultant (AIA).
