Pierluigi, a Bologna University Economics graduate and financial planner by profession, engaged in a refereeing course on the advice of a friend and made his Serie A debut in 1991.

Pierluigi, who worked as an international referee from 1995 until 2006, was assigned five matches at the 1996 Olympic Games, including the final between Nigeria and Argentina. He refereed the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final against Bayern Munich and Manchester United, which he characterized as a “lions’ roar” at the finish.

Pierluigi achieved the zenith of his career in 2002 when he was selected to officiate the World Cup final between Brazil and Germany.
