Ponniyin Selvan is translated as (The Son of Ponni), it is a historical fiction novel based on true events by Indian author Kalki Krishnamurthy, it is written in Tamil language. In about 2,210 pages, the novel tells the story of early days of Chola prince Arulmozhivarman. At first, It was serialized in the weekly editions of KalkI, a Tamil magazine, from 29 October 1950 to 16 May 1954.

Ponniyin selvan tells the tale of the Chola kingdom and the struggle for succession. When the current monarch Sundra Chola, who is at the mercy of the Pazhuvettaraiyars, is very ill and bedridden, the Pazhuvettaraiyars, who essentially run the affairs of the bedridden king, plot with other allies for Madurantakan (Sundara Chola brother’s son), who is married to their daughter, to ascend to the throne when Arulmozhi Varman aka Ponniyin Selvan, is regarded by the people as the best candidate for the throne. Even though Nandini, a key adversary in the novel, hopes to work with the Pandyas to assassinate the Cholas, princess Kundavai still feels that Arulmozhi will make a great emperor.
