The river Ponni or Kaveri, as it is also known, flows through Tamil Nadu and is referenced several times in the context of the royal family.
Ponniyin Selvan is about the conflict over the Chola kingdom’s succession. A comet appears in the sky at the start of the tale. Which is considered as a warning that a royal family member will pass away. It is believed that Sundara Chola would soon pass away because he has been ill for a long time. Sundara Chola’s successor is Aditha Karikalan, he is recognized for his unpredictable behavior despite being praised for his bravery in battle. The people likes his younger brother Arulmozhi Varman, and Princess Kundavai, who is renowned for her smart political analysis, shares the opinion that Arulmozhi will make an outstanding ruler. She is preparing the shy princess Vanathi (Sobhita Dhulipala), of Kodumbalur clan for marriage to Arulmozhi.
Why is it called Ponniyin Selvan?
It called Ponniyin Selvan because he was saved from drowning in the river, by Mother Kaveri herself, when he was 5 years old. This gave him the title “Ponniyin Selvan” or “Son of Kaveri”. Periya and Ilaya Piratti raised him in Pazhayarai. His sister, sent him to Sri Lanka at the age of 19 to fight after training him effectively.
