Prince Augustus Frederick was renowned for his liberal ideologies, which included judicial reform, the abolition of slavery, the liberation of the Catholic Church, and the lifting of existing municipal prohibitions on Jews and Dissenters.
Augustus Frederick became a Knight of the Garter on June 2, 1786, and on May 28, 1801, he received his investiture by emancipation. The Duke of Sussex, the Earl of Inverness, and the Baron of Arklow were all titles bestowed upon him by the British monarch on November 24, 1801.
He received the title in 1843 because he had no legitimate successors. The Duke made a donation to the Jews’ Hospital and Orphan Asylum, which ultimately became Norwood, in 1815. The royal patronage lasted until Queen Elizabeth II became Norwood’s patron.

At the age of 70, the Duke of Sussex passed away at Kensington Palace from Erysipelas in 1843. In his testament, he made it clear that no state funeral would be held, and on May 4, 1843, he was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery.
