Rachel Jane Brooking, who was born on October 18, 1975, is a New Zealand Labour Party official and member of parliament who is now the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries, and Minister for Food Safety in the Sixth Labour Government. She was first elected as a member of parliament, in the general election for New Zealand in 2020, and she works as a lawyer.
Brooking graduated from the University of Otago with a double degree in ecology and law. However, she was a practicing attorney before being elected to parliament.
She had a focus in environmental, resource management, and local government law, she spent some time in Wellington working for the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, before moving back to Dunedin to work with Anderson Lloyd.
In 2019, Brooking was chosen to serve on a government committee that will be examining the Resource Management Act of 1991.
She has previously served as the Resource Management Law Association’s Otago/Southland branch chair. Brooking started organizing protests against education minister Lockwood Smith because of exorbitant tuition costs, back in 1994, during her first year of college.
