William Ray Guy, an American football player for the Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders of the National Football League, was born on December 22, 1949, and passed away on November 3, 2022. (NFL). Ray was named an undeniable All-American in 1972 while he was a senior playing for the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

When the Oakland Raiders selected Guy with the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 1973 NFL Draft, he became the first pure punter ever selected. In 2014, Guy was admitted to both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Guy, an eight-time All-Pro, is regarded as the best punter of all time.

On August 2, 2014, he was given the distinction of being the first pure punter and the second pure kicker (after Jan Stenerud) to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
In four different sports, Guy excelled at Thomson High School in Thomson, Georgia. Ray played quarterback, safety, linebacker, and tailback in addition to kicking and punting while leading Thomson to the Georgia Class A state football championships in 1967 and 1968. Guy averaged 49.7 yards per punt in 1968.

Guy scored 39 points while playing basketball for Thomson the day after the 1968 state championship football game, despite not having any practice that day. In the 1969 state playoff semifinal baseball game for Thomson, Guy pitched a shutout game over 15 innings.
