Reece James is an English professional footballer, who currently serves as a right-back for Chelsea and also holds the position of captain. Internationally, he plays for the England national team. James began his football journey at Kew Park Rangers and Epsom Eagles before joining Chelsea at the tender age of six. At the age of seven, he briefly played for Fulham, a rival club in West London.
Initially, James played as a striker and admired the legendary Didier Drogba during his early teenage years. However, he later transitioned to the midfield and eventually settled into the right-back position, which initially posed challenges for him. In March 2017, he officially turned professional with Chelsea. Notably, during the 2017-18 season, James led the under-18 team to victory in the FA Youth Cup and was honoured with the Academy Player of the Season award.
In June 2018, he signed a new four-year contract with Chelsea. Furthermore, James embarked on a loan spell with Championship club Wigan Athletic for the 2018-19 season. His exceptional performance led to his inclusion in the 2018-19 Championship Team of the Season. At the end of the season, he received three accolades at Wigan Athletic’s awards ceremony, including the prestigious Player of the Year title.
James made his debut for Chelsea on 25 September 2019, following his return from injury. He had an impressive performance, scoring his first goal and providing two assists in a dominant 7-1 victory over Grimsby Town in the third round of the 2019-20 EFL Cup. Notably, James etched his name in Chelsea’s history books by becoming the youngest-ever goalscorer for the club in the UEFA Champions League.
He achieved this feat by scoring the fourth goal in their thrilling 4-4 draw against Ajax on 5 November. James’ talent and contributions to the team were recognized when he signed a new six-year contract with Chelsea on 5 September 2022, extending his commitment to the club until June 2028. Throughout his career, James has represented England at various youth levels, starting from under-18 and progressing up to under-21.
His potential was evident when he was selected for the under-20 squad in the 2017 Toulon Tournament. Furthermore, James received his first call-up to the senior team on 5 October 2020, marking an important milestone in his international career.
