Zylberberg was born to Polish Jewish parents in Etterbeek, Belgium, and spent much of her childhood hiding from the Nazis in occupied France during WWII.
After the war, Régine became a torch singer and, by 1953, a nightclub manager in Paris.
She is credited with the invention of the modern-day discothèque by creating a new dynamic environment at Paris’ Whisky à Gogo, where the ubiquitous jukebox was replaced with disc jockeys utilizing networked turntables.
In 1957, she opened Chez Régine in the Latin Quarter, and it immediately became a favourite hangout for celebrities, socialites, and aristocracy.
She and her spouse lived in Saint-Tropez. Leon Rothcage, her first husband, whom she married at the age of 16, gave her one son, Lionel.
