Régine Zylberberg was a Belgian-born French singer and nightclub operator. Regina Zylberberg was born on December 26, 1929, and used the mononym Régine. Queen of the Night was her moniker.

Zylberberg was born in Anderlecht, Belgium, to Polish Jewish parents, and spent much of her childhood hiding from the Nazis in occupied France.

After the war, Régine became a torch singer and, by 1953, a nightclub manager in Paris.

She is credited with the invention of the modern-day discothèque by creating a new dynamic environment at Paris’ Whisky à Gogo, where the ubiquitous jukebox was replaced with disc jockeys utilizing networked turntables.

In 1957, she opened Chez Régine in the Latin Quarter, which immediately became a favourite hangout for celebrities, socialites, and aristocrats.

With her popularity growing, Zylberberg expanded her Chez Régine restaurant empire to include locations in London, New York City, Monte Carlo, and other destinations.

These were ultra-exclusive venues in fantastic city locations, each with her own disco-style setup. Zylberberg’s Paris Whisky à Gogo inspired the eventual building of the Whisky a Go-Go nightclub in Los Angeles.
