Along with his sister Rebecka and brothers Robin, he was raised in Stockholm. Erik Rakell, Rakell’s granddad, was a professional player, therefore until he was 14 years old, Rakell concentrated on table tennis.
He then focused on ice hockey after that. Rakell liked Mats Sundin, a forward for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and later Patric Hornqvist as a child in Stockholm.
Before being transferred to the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League (AHL) to start the 2013–14 season, Rakell took part in the Ducks’ 2013 training camp and preseason.
Through his first nine games with the Admirals, Rakell had five points and six penalty minutes. He was second on the club in power-play goals and tied for first in scoring, goals, and appearances.
