Rinky Hijikata, who won the last three years his first Grand Slam-level match to advance to the second round of Australian Open qualifying, was awarded the Male Junior Athlete of the Year at the 2019 Australian Tennis Awards.
According to him, he was playing for something greater than himself when he won a silver medal in doubles at the Youth Olympics in 2018. When he gets to play for Australia or my state, he doesn’t take it for granted at all; I simply believe it means a little bit more when you play for something greater.
Hijikata qualified for the main draw of the 2022 Melbourne Summer Set 1 and made his ATP tour debut there in January 2022. In the final qualifying round, Hijikata defeated Henri Laaksonen, the world’s 98th-ranked player, to earn his maiden top-100 victory. He was defeated by eventual finalist Maxime Cressy in the opening round.
