Ruth Malcomson, who was born on April 16th, 1906, and died on May 25th, 1988, was Miss America in 1924. She was 18 years old when she won the title.

Malcomson, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, won the amateur division of the competition in 1923 and then came back to defeat Mary Campbell, the reigning champion who was going for her third straight victory.

The beauty pageant was still occasionally referred to as “The Atlantic City Pageant” when Ruth Malcomson was only a couple of years old, and the winner was known as “The Golden Mermaid.” She is interred in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania’s Arlington Cemetery.

The 1924 Miss America Ruth Malcomson Schaubel passed away on Wednesday at Delaware County Memorial Hospital. She lived in Broomall, Pennsylvania, and was 82 years old.

Ruth Malcomson won the competition in its fourth year as an 18-year-old resident of Philadelphia, having previously won the Miss Philadelphia and Miss Pennsylvania pageants in 1924.
