Burnette began his career in show business as a saxophonist before relocating to Chicago and working there as a singer, actor, and stand-up comedian.

Early in the 1930s, he made the trip to Hollywood, where he eventually rose to become one of the most renowned sidekicks in Western film history. Burnette was married to Marie Sisk until her death in 1962. Two daughters and two sons were born to the couple. Also pursuing a career in show business, his daughter Sharon sang on The Pat Boone Show.
