Stanislav Stanislavovich Shushkevich was a Belarusian politician and scientist who was born on December 15, 1934, in Minsk. He was at one time the first head of state of independent Belarus.

This was after the state of independent Belarus seceded from the Soviet Union, serving as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet. Stanislav played a pivotal role in social-democratic reforms and was an active participant in the creation of the crucial Commonwealth of Independent States.

From a peasant farmer’s family, he lived with his mother and grandmother in Nazi-occupied Minsk. He completed school with a medal and had the opportunity to enter the

Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Belarusian State University, where he graduated in 1956. Stanislav further studied at the graduate school of the Institute of Physics of the Belarusian Academy of Sciences, where he researched in the field of radio electronics.
