Stuart Woods received his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the University of Georgia in 1959. Woods was born in Manchester, Georgia, and attended that institution. After completing his education, he joined the Air National Guard and went through basic training for a period of two months. Subsequently, he relocated to New York and started working in the advertising sector there.
After the decade of the 1960s came to a close, Woods made the move to England, settling in Knightsbridge, London, where he remained employed in the advertising industry. After spending three years in London, Woods made the decision to travel to Ireland so that he could create a book based on an ancient family tale that he had been told about when he was a youngster. He then began his life in Ireland.
