American college football coach and player Tom Reed was born on January 7, 1945, and passed away on September 26, 2022. His career coaching record was 43-43-2, and he presided over Miami University from 1978 to 1982 and North Carolina State University from 1983 to 1985.
Reed completed his studies at Oxford, Ohio’s Miami University in 1967. He spent two seasons there as a member of the Miami RedHawks under Bo Schembechler. In 1964 and 1966, he had respective running yard totals of 38 and 34.

From 1978 until 1982, Reed led Miami University as its head coach. When he guided the Redskins to 8-2-1 records in 1978 and 1981, he had his greatest seasons. The teams led by Reed pulled off a number of significant upset victories, including victories against North Carolina in 1978 and Kentucky at Lexington in 1979. Reed finished his time at Miami with a career record of 34-19-2 and four winning seasons in five years. Tim Rose succeeded Reed as head coach at NC State after the 1981 campaign after Reed took the post.
