An ex-Minneapolis police officer named Tou Thao is accused of killing George Floyd. George Floyd was an African-American man who was killed by police on May 25, 2020, while being held in custody in south Minneapolis. Tou Thao was seen standing with his back turned while Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in the video that went viral on social media. In the video, Floyd was seen suffocating under the knee of a white police officer. Over a hundred cities in the United States and around the world experienced a series of demonstrations and protests following George Floyd’s passing.
On June 3, 2020, Thao was detained. Tou Thao was charged with aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter with culpable negligence creating an unreasonable risk and aiding and abetting second-degree murder without intent.
