Andrews was born in New Orleans’ cosmopolitan Tremé neighbourhood and raised there. The trombone’s parents are James Andrews Jr. and Lois Andrews.

The trombone is best known for playing the trombone and trumpet, though it can also play the tuba, organ, and drums. Andrews began playing the trombone that his brother James had given him when he was four years old “since the family already had a trumpet player.” At the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Bo Diddley overheard four-year-old Andrews playing and extended an invitation for him to perform.
