Tyre Nichols was a Memphis, Tennessee, man who died on January 7, 2023, as a result of “heinous” and “inhumane” physical torture by Memphis police officers. Nichols suffered a heart attack, kidney failure, and a shattered neck, according to his mother.

On January 7, 2023, Nichols was taken to the hospital in critical condition after being stopped by Memphis Police Department officers. The death of Nichols sparked uproar in the community, a federal civil rights investigation, and calls for the cops involved to be prosecuted.

On January 27, 2023, Memphis police released body cam footage that showed multiple officers beating Nichols. You can see it here, but be warned: it contains graphic and disturbing information.

In a video statement, the police chief announced the terminations, they were identified as Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills, Jr., and Justin Smith in a Memphis police news release. According to a police press release, the cops were all hired between 2018 and 2020.

According to human rights attorney Ben Crump, who was hired by Nichols’ family, an independent autopsy found that Nichols had suffered from significant bleeding caused by a serious assault.
