On Tuesday, pneumonia claimed the life of Van Conner, a bassist who was instrumental in the formation of Screaming Trees and wrote songs like “All I Know” and “Nearly Lost You.” His bandmate and brother, Gary Lee Conner, posted the information on social media.

In Washington State, Screaming Trees was established in the middle of the 1980s. Before signing with Epic Records in 1990, when the grunge phenomenon was just getting started and bands like Mudhoney, the Melvins, Soundgarden, and Nirvana were among them, they released six independent albums.

Despite the band’s major-label debut album’s lackluster reception, Sweet Oblivion from 1992 marked the group’s commercial breakthrough.

The album’s lead single, “Nearly Lost You,” peaked at No. 5 on American Modern Rock radio and helped it enter the Billboard 200 chart.

Two more Sweet Oblivion singles, Bed of Roses and Dollar Bill, reached the Modern Rock Top 30 peak.
