Van Conner gained enormous fame while playing bass for Screaming Trees. Conner, his brother Gary Lee Conner, and Mark Pickerel formed the band Explosive Generation while they were still in high school.

The band’s name was eventually changed to Screaming Trees when singer Mark Lanegan joined in 1985. The group left their hometown of Ellensburg, Washington, and moved to Seattle in the late 1980s to join that city’s emerging alternative rock scene.

While a member of Screaming Trees, where he sang lead vocals and played the guitar, Conner began the side project Solomon Grundy. Conner joined the Dinosaur Jr. live lineup at the same time that band released an album in 1990.

After Screaming Trees split up, Conner started a number of new alternative rock bands, including VALIS and Musk Ox. Conner also started the side project Solomon Grundy while he was a member of Screaming Trees, where he sang lead and played guitar.

Van Conner was born on March 17, 1967. On January 18, 2023, Conner tragically passed away at the age of 55.
