When Conner, his brother Gary Lee Conner, and Mark Pickerel were in high school, they formed the band Explosive Generation. That band released an album in 1990, and Conner was also a member of the Dinosaur Jr. live lineup at the time.
They changed their name to Screaming Trees after adding singer Mark Lanegan to the lineup in 1985. The band relocated from Ellensburg, Washington to Seattle in the late 1980s to become a part of the city’s developing alternative rock scene.
After Screaming Trees disbanded, Conner worked as a session musician and formed several other alternative rock bands, including VALIS and Musk Ox.
Conner worked on seven studio albums with Screaming Trees before the band disbanded in 2000.
