Before enrolling in barber school, he performed janitorial duties at Vanderbilt University.
In 1965, he launched Winfrey’s Barbershop, which quickly established itself as a cornerstone of the Cleveland Park neighbourhood in East Nashville, along with a convenience store next door.
He was chosen to serve on the Nashville Metro Council in 1975, where he did so for almost 20 years.
As a deacon at Faith United Missionary Baptist Church, Vernon Winfrey also helped the community.
He died at the age of 89 on July 9, 2022.
