Authorities said a former corrections officer accused of assisting a capital murder suspect escape from an Alabama jail last week died Monday after a police chase ended in a car crash in Indiana.
Vicky White, 56, was pronounced dead hours after the crash, according to Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear.
The murder suspect, Casey White, 38, surrendered to authorities after the crash, according to Rick Singleton, sheriff of Lauderdale County in Alabama.
According to the US Marshals Service, when Casey White stepped out of the car, he exclaimed: “Please assist my wife. She shot herself in the head, and I had nothing to do with it.”
Vicky and Casey White were not related, according to Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding on NBC’s “TODAY” show on Tuesday.
Although preliminary evidence suggests Vicky White shot herself, the sheriff stated that “we won’t rule anything out until we have a thorough investigation by the coroner.”
Lockyear has scheduled an autopsy for Tuesday.
Vicky White died shortly after 7 p.m. local time at a hospital in Evansville, Indiana, according to Lockyear. He didn’t say anything about how she died.
