He had Irish ancestry. When Scully was four years old, his biological father passed away from illness. His mother later wed Allan Reeve, an English merchant sailor, whom Scully referred to as “my dad.” He only had one sibling, a younger sister who passed away at age 65 from brain cancer in 2002. In the Bronx, Scully attended Fordham Preparatory School. In the basement of the Pennsylvania Hotel in New York City, he delivered beer and mail, pushed clothing racks, and cleaned silver.
At the age of eight, Scully fell in love with baseball after watching the outcome of Game 2 of the 1936 World Series in laundry and feeling a twinge of sorrow for the hapless New York Giants, who had lost the game 18-4. He became a “very huge Giants fan” since he could go to games for free and because he lived close to the Polo Grounds and was a part of the NYC Police Athletic League and Catholic Youth Organization.
