The president of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), Marcus Ryder, announced Mona’s passing on Twitter this morning, Tuesday, July 5. ” I wake up to the news that Mona Hammond has passed away,” he remarked.

Her many accomplishments include co-founding Talawa Theatre Company in 1985.

She also obtained a degree from London, and in 2019 she was awarded an honorary RADA Fellowship.

The Jamaican-British actress was best known for her roles as Susu in Desmond’s during the early 1990s and Blossom Jackson in the BBC soap opera EastEnders.

For her role as Blossom Jackson, the matriarch of the Jackson clan, on the BBC One serial opera Eastenders, Mona is most remembered among fans of soap operas.

She debuted as Blossom on our televisions in 1994, and she played the character till she left in 1997.

She then made a comeback more than ten years later, in 2010, when she played the same part in two episodes.

It was actually Mona’s second time acting in the soap opera; she had previously made an appearance in 1986 on EastEnders in a small role as Michelle Fowler’s midwife.

From 1965 to 1987, she was married to Michael Saunders; after that, there is no information about her getting married or having relationships with other people.
