Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man with a four-year-old boy, was working for FedEx and a photographer with his own website on June 5, 1993. Nichols grew up in Sacramento, California, and intends to relocate to Memphis, Tennessee, in 2020.

Nichols had a slender build due to Crohn’s disease, weighing around 145 pounds (66 kilograms) and standing 6 feet 3 inches tall, according to his family’s attorney, Benjamin Crump (1.91 meters). Antonio Romanucci, an attorney, has also been hired by the family.

Nichols was driving when police officers urged him to pull over due to his reckless driving. Tyre originally thought gang members were after him and impersonating police officers. As the cops began to chase him, he sought to leave. As soon as he was apprehended, the five police officers began punching him.

In an attempt to cough him up, they shattered his neck. Nichols was taken to the hospital and died three days later, on January 10. The Memphis Police Department acted quickly in the matter and fired all of the officers involved. Cops involved included Justin Smith, Desmond Mills, Emmitt Martin, Tadarrius Bean, and Demetrius Haley.
