Thanksgiving supper continues to remain the focal point of celebrations, with the emphasis of the occasion being giving gratitude. A harvest festival and a day of thankfulness were initially observed. A turkey, potatoes (often mashed or sweet), stuffing, squash, corn (maize), green beans, cranberries (often in sauce form), and pumpkin pie make up the traditional Thanksgiving meal.
Attending religious services, making donations to organizations that serve Thanksgiving dinner to the less fortunate, and watching sporting events like the NFL and Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on television are additional Thanksgiving traditions. Black Friday, the day following Thanksgiving, is the busiest shopping day of the year in the US. On Black Friday, the Christmas and holiday seasons officially start.
