Since 2017, American lawyer and politician Matthew Louis Gaetz have represented Florida’s first congressional district in the U.S. Congress.
He has been referred to as a supporter of far-right politics and is a Republican who has emerged as one of former president Donald Trump’s top congressional backers.
Gaetz, the son of renowned Florida politician Don Gaetz, was raised in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. After graduating from William & Mary Law School, he practised law in private practice before deciding to run for state representative.
He served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016, when he rose to fame for defending the divisive “stand-your-ground statute” in the wake of the 2012 Trayvon Martin killing.
In addition to being reelected in 2018 and 2020, he was initially elected to the US House of Representatives in 2016.
By having sex with a female teenager, Gaetz allegedly broke federal sex trafficking laws.
Late in 2020, the accusations—which Gaetz adamantly denied—began to receive attention from the Department of Justice. The House Ethics Committee also made a disclosure about an inquiry in April 2021.
