Darlin was founded in 1992 by guitarist Homem-Christo, bassist Bangalter, and guitarist and drummer Laurent Brancowitz. The Beach Boys’ song “Darlin,” which they covered together with an original composition, inspired the band’s moniker. Both songs were issued as part of a multi-artist EP by Duophonic Records, a label run by Stereolab, who invited Darlin’ to play for them on their UK tour.

After around six months together, Darlin broke up after writing four songs and participating in two performances. Daft Punk met Stuart Macmillan of Slam, who was also a co-founder of the Scottish label Soma Quality Recordings, at a rave they both went to in September 1993 at EuroDisney. The demo tape Daft Punk gave Macmillan at the occasion served as the inspiration for their 1994 debut single, “The New Wave,” which garnered very little radio.

They rose to prominence in the late 1990s as part of the French house movement, blending house music with funk, disco, rock, and pop. They became well-known, made money, and are today recognized as one of the most important dance music acts.

The duo continued to release music until 22 February 2021, at which point veteran Daft Punk spokesperson Kathryn Frazier acknowledged the breakup without providing any other information.
