The 49ers selected the young guy, a gifted athlete, in the seventh round of the 2001 NFL Draft. During his rookie season, Eric participated in all 16 games and caught 40 receptions for 362 yards and three touchdowns. It sounds great, for sure. He did something genuinely extraordinary in 2004, which caught the attention of the NFL. By receiving 82 catches for 825 yards and two touchdowns, he truly broke the tight end scoring record.

Johnson had to leave the sport earlier than he had hoped due to his illnesses. Due to injuries, Eric missed the complete seasons in 2003 and 2005. When Johnson’s contract with the 49ers expired, he agreed to a one-year agreement with the New Orleans Saints. He caught 48 passes for 378 yards and two scores in 14 games during the 2007 season.

However, Eric Johnson was compelled to resign in 2008.
